To fulfill our mission of promoting just and equitable development in El Salvador, Voices supports, develops, and implements a wide variety of projects and activities, each of which is a direct response to a need or priority identified by a partner community.
Over the years, Voices’ projects have included:
- Organizing and supporting women's cooperatives;
- Emergency prevention, preparation, and response;
- Preservation of local forests;
- Public health interventions;
- Organizational capacity building;
- Support for micro lending;
- Youth leadership development;
- Historical preservation;
- Support for the protection of land rights and titles;
- Advocacy for just public policies in the U.S. and El Salvador;
- Organizing cultural exchanges;
- And many, many others.
We maintain a constant presence in our Salvadoran partner communities, enabling us to work closely with community leaders and organizers to develop appropriate strategies and programs that address the social, economic, health, environmental, and political challenges they face.
At every step we seek local solutions to local problems, and promote sustainability and empowerment within our partner communities. We shy away from one-size-fits-all, prefabricated “solutions” that often result in a waste of limited resources, promote dependence, and hinder empowerment. Our Salvadoran partners identify their own needs, help design interventions, look for funding and resources, and manage projects. Ideally, we limit our role to:
Advising our partners and promoting their organizational capacity;
-
Facilitating relationships with potential donors and other partners; and
-
Informing the international community of social justice issues in El Salvador.
